Living UNDONE
What does it mean to be free when society refuses to let you go? An unflinching look at America's criminal justice system — and the survivors, families, and advocates demanding redemption over punishment.
About Living UNDONE
America incarcerates more people per capita than any nation on Earth. But the punishment does not end at the prison gates. Living UNDONE examines the invisible sentence that follows formerly incarcerated individuals for the rest of their lives — the stigma, the barriers, and the systemic forces that make rehabilitation nearly impossible.
Directed by Amanda Kasmira “Kazzy” Cryer and co-written with Roland Washington, the film weaves together the voices of a City Council Member who was exonerated, a mother who put herself through law school to free her brother, a 30-year prison survivor now mentoring others, a conflict mediator who has spent decades inside America's correctional facilities, and family members whose lives have been shattered — and then rebuilt — by the system.
At its core, Living UNDONE is not a film about crime. It is a film about what we choose to do with human beings once the state has finished with them — and whether compassion, dignity, and redemption are reserved only for some.
Cryer suffered a focal seizure on the first day of filming, resuming work within 45 minutes. That refusal to stop — even in personal crisis — defines the ethos of the film itself.
Music: Original Score by Josh Datánt Villarreal & Alicia Sutedja. With “Skin” performed by Zola Jesus (used under festival license).
Director's Statement
"I make films that are unfinished by design — stories that require the audience to complete them. Living UNDONE is a film that asks what it costs to remain whole in a world designed to break you."
